Every great leader starts somewhere... behind a counter, greeting customers, solving problems, and learning how to lead by example. On Monday, November 17, our retail and small business community came together to talk about the stuff that actually keeps them up at night. How do you balance employee training with the immediate need to just get things done? Do you hire for personality or experience? How do you keep passion alive when margins are tight? Where do you find your 'why' when the work gets really hard?
Leading the conversation was President & CEO of Seamen's Bank Lori Meads alongside David Troutman from Scargo Cafe and retail pro Susan Cyr; three people who've lived these challenges and built something lasting in the process. Lori Meads began her own professional journey in customer service before leading one of Cape Cod’s most community-minded institutions. She shared lessons from her path, from early career experiences to the values that continue to shape her leadership today.
Real questions meeting real experience! One attendee said it best:
"I really enjoyed myself and learned so much. I loved the concept of having mentors at each table and allowing small groups to chat and ask questions... it gave all of us a chance to connect more personally and feel comfortable asking more vulnerable questions. Overall, it was incredibly effective and a joy to attend."
This session filled up fast, but we've got another coming up on December 8 focused on planning for 2026 — grab your spot before it's gone!
